Surprises & Dazzling Moments!
I am always amazed when others seem shocked because they witness Isaac doing the most simple things.
There was a time when I would feel a bit angry…angry because folks just seemed to expect so little.
These days I am mostly annoyed…and sometimes amazed.
I am most annoyed when this ‘amazement’ and ‘shock’ comes from educators. I am a little disappointed when it comes from other parents.
Let me give you an example of what I mean…we actually had surprising and dazzling moment’ happen today.
Here is what happened.
I picked up isaac an hour early from school today so that I could take him to see his pediatrician.
We went because he has been complaining about a sore throat for a few days. That sore throat plus the fact that his class aid was
away from school last week because she had strep throat was enough to send me to the doctor to get him checked out.
I don’t take chances with strep because it can cause other harm to his body if left unchecked.
Anyway, when we got arrived at teh office, we ran into one of Isaac’s classmates and her Mom. They were very nice and they spoke to Isaac.
I didn’t even recognize them at first.
The little girls Mom was extra nice. Her conversation with me started something like this. “I think that Isaac is sooo cute. He is just amazing!”
I said, ” Really!, and why is that?” She went on to tell me that Isaac had spoken to her by her name when she came to pick up her own daughter for an early dismissal.
She said that the teachers were excited because ‘this was his first time’ doing such a thing.
BIG SIGH!!!!!!!!! Are you kidding me?
Yes I’m annoyed. ….Isaac speaks to people all day long!!!
Yes, I’m disappointed. ….Why are his teachers surprised!!!
I suppose that little Jessica’s mom was attempting to be nice. She seemed genuinely thrilled.’
These types of episodes lead me to wonder…exactly what type of expectations DO some of these folks have?
Am I really helping my son by exposing him to what I feel is these low expectations?…..Do I need to tkae him out of public school?
Do I need to work reallyhard and move our family to our own little private island?
I don’t think so.
Minds can be changed…if people are open to seeing facts.
It’s hearts tht cannot be changed, and I believe that changing hearts is the job of a power much greater than my own… it’s God’s job.
And I trust Him.
Now THIS is a dazzling moment!!!
